Several months ago router WNDR4500 from Netgear manufacturer was a real sensation in the market thanks to its unmatched performance characteristics. Nowadays this model has got a few rivals that can boast a number of privileges, as in design so in specifications. Despite this fact, Netgear WNDR4500 deserves a special attention, being among the most advanced wireless solutions for home-based networks.
Design and Framework
Netgear WNDR4500 is developed in a refined and stylish design which makes it a desirable device in any environment. Its casing is made of black glossy plastic and is fixed to the transparent plastic stand. Such framework makes the horizontal or wall localization impossible. The clipboard consists of a single Netgear logo, while the back board accommodates the information about the model, MAC addresses and a password by default used for the connection with Wi-Fi network.
The front block is distinguished by the availability of green indicators which signalize about LAN and USB ports connection, about the Wi-Fi network activity, and about the Internet connection. LED icons are replicated on the transparent stand to make the enabled activities more obvious. The top block of the casing is equipped with two more buttons; one of the buttons is used for Wi-Fi deactivation, while the other one – for the initiation of process on wireless clients pairing with the router by means of WPS.
The back block of casing is traditionally designated for all sockets and ports. This router can boast a couple of integrated USB 2.0 ports, four Gbit LAN-ports, a single Gbit WAN port, settings flushing button, power socket, and startup button. Moreover, the top and bottom blocks are assigned for the ventilation arrays.
The initial delivery set of WNDR4500 includes only a few necessary components and is void of any decorative accessories. Thus, the router goes along with the user manual, a couple of disks containing various applets, and a PSU of 60 W.
Router Netgear WNDR4500 is able to support 450 Mbit/sec simultaneously as in 2.4 GHz frequency range, so in 5 GHz range. High-end processor allows realizing the file backup and transfer with a 30% quicker speed than other similar routers for wireless home-based networks. This model is equipped with six highly sensitive internal antennas and super-power signal amplifier; they are called to enlarge the Wi-Fi coverage and the total flow of data transfer up to 900 Mbit/sec.
To continue, the users are able to connect this router with the external hard drive that transforms the device into a multimedia DLNA server the access to which can be given to TV-sets, players, or game consoles with DLNA support. The integrated Quality-of-Service technology ensures the maximal acceptable quality of video from the Internet due to the outstanding priority of video streams over other traffic in the network.
Other technical peculiarities are listed below:
— memory: DDRII – 128 Mb/NAND – 128 Mb;
— integrated chip: Broadcom BCM4706 (600 MHz);
— safety: WPS, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK;
— firewall: parental control, protection from DoS, SPI, network service/URL filter;
— file-server: Samba, FTP;
— antennas: 3 (5 GHz) Rayspan off-board balance and 3 (2.4 GHz) Rayspan off-board balance.
Setup and Control Options
The ease of setup and control over Netgear WNDR4500 should be brought to the limelight. All the manipulations are accomplished without any additional programs and the configuration can be adjusted due to a user-friendly interface right from the PC, smartphone and other tablet.

In addition, the parents can adjust the filters to prohibit the browsing of non-authorized sites (i.e. with adult or violent content).
2. Scheduled Wi-Fi disconnection. With the purpose to make the usage of router more saving, the customers are able to schedule the automatic Wi-Fi disconnection when the PC/smartphone is not in use.
3. Use register. This option is called to monitor all Internet traffic and notify the customer about the monthly/weekly traffic limit (for the networks with the limited traffic volume).
4. Guest network. The availability of Netgear Genie applet and the possibility to use the interface based on browser stimulate an easy setup of options for the network guests. It is feasible to adjust the option in a way each (or separate) guests could enter the Internet without the password to the home network.
