Graphics card segment is currently represented by a huge number of products targeted at customers with quite different needs. New graphics card R7770 Power Edition 1GD5/OC from MSI developers is able to satisfy the needs of customers with any needs due to the advanced frequency formula, well-thought framework and improved performance characteristics.
Framework and Layout
At first sight MSI R7770 Power Edition 1GD5/OC is not distinguished by the originality in design or framework. Still, the employed cooling system is considered to be a zest of this graphics card. Codenamed TransThermal, the cooling system has got a specific configuration and changeable design to ensure the maximal heat removal characteristics.
The cooler has got rather solid radiator block covered by a plastic wafer and furnished with a heat pipe. It is blown off by 90 mm axial fan. The cooler’s efficiency can be improved by the implementation of an additional fan of similar dimensions. This additional fan is equipped with Propeller Blade arms which reach the fixed speed of 2500 r/min. Such layout allows the customer to use the cooler in two modes. In the first case the additional fan is installed above the nominal fan and increases the airflow power. The second mode presupposes the installation of the additional fan near the nominal one to increase the area of blow-off. In this case both fans are sure to cool down not only graphic processor, but also PWM components and memory chips. The general graphics card length reaches 22 cm, but on conditions of the installed additional fan, the length enlarges to 26 cm.
To continue, graphics card MSI R7770 uses an original circuit board: power subsystem employs four-phase scheme instead of three-phase one. Power holder circuit is equipped with components of Military Class III classification. The card’s base has got copper mounting to effectively remove heat from processor.
The upper plate accommodates CrossFire connector along with two-contact socket for the additional fan. Power socket is localized on the side plate. The fixing strip on the rear plate is destined for the interface sockets: DisplayPort, DVI and HDMI.
The nominal delivery set counts all necessary for installation and utilization components: user manual, software disk, CrossFire bridge, additional fan, DVI/D-Sub adapter, power adapter from 2 molex 2-pin to PCI-E 6-pin.
It should be mentioned that the cooling system employed by the R7770 Power Edition graphics card proves to show promising heat removal characteristics on normal conditions. The chip warms up to 30 degrees in rest mode considering the 1050 r/min speed of fan. In the event of substantial game loading, the chip warms up to 63 degrees with 2300 r/min fan rotation speed. The installation of the additional fan provides for the 2-3 degrees reduction. The cooler is practically noiseless, however the increase of loading triggers the noise growth. Dust Removal technology stipulates the reverse fan rotation for 30 seconds for the start-up and is called to fight over the dust and dirt laid on the cooling system components.
The integrated Triple Overvoltage option (the adjustment of power voltage in reference nodes) and advanced stabilizer scheme stimulated good overclocking showings and improvement of frequency potential. Thus, the chip is able to show stability of operation on 1220 MHz when the voltage is increased; in its turn, the memory is able to work on 6144 MHz.
Being the graphics card with the accelerated characteristics, MSI R7770 Power Edition shows 5%-6% better performance than the reference models. The supplementary overclocking facilitates the performance increment. The increased chip frequency and the advanced memory subsystem operation allowed improving the standard adapter by 23%-29%.
