The requirements of customers towards contemporary power modules are quite tough. They should own good performance characteristics and high coefficient of efficiency level, as well as 80Plus marker. The latter speaks about quality and ability to satisfy the needs of any PC. However, all PSU are classified according to different criteria, so one can find appropriate product even without 80Plus standards. The compliance with those standards is realized on 115V and 230V conditions but there are a number of standards applied to 220V-240V. Power module Chieftec A80 650W doesn’t belong to the army of 80Plus products, though can boast outstanding performance and efficiency. It is primarily targeted at the segment of affordable PSU solutions.
Design and Framework
Chieftec A80 650W design is developed in a classical template common for the models with a solid frontal fan. The casing consists of a ventilation perforation, decorative grid with the brand logo, sockets for module cables and a set of integrated cables. No blinking LEDs, no multi-color fan arms can be found in this PSU; it has been developed with the advanced functionality in mind rather than extraordinary flamboyant design.
The cooling system is represented by a 120 mm fan with a friction bearing. The cooler is able to gain up to 2000 r/min, while the noise level does not go beyond 34 dB. The maximal airflow equals to 50 CFM. Internal airflow is formed by means of a dedicated trim made of transparent plastic which covers one third of arms surface.
PSU layout is not differentiated by innovative components or technologies: everything is designed in a way to ensure appropriate showings, but at the same time, to make this model affordable. Thus, Chieftec A80 650W is equipped with a single-phase circuit technique of sensing device (with operation voltage of 400V) and a separate security module chip. DC-DC-converter scheme for +3.3V and +5V buses is not discernible, so this can witness about the traditional approach towards the efficiency increase.
The initial delivery set of Chieftec A80 650W consists of PSU itself, user manual, power cable, fasteners, and a set of detachable module cables. It is void of any premium additions like silicon laying, drafts or figured fasteners, which are delivered together with the casing or as separate accessories.
Chieftec A80 650W has claimed the following technical peculiarities:
— cable management type: module;
— nominal power: 650W;
— input parameters: 220-240V, 50Hz, 6A;
— output parameters: +5V 22A, +12V1 30А, +12V2 30А, -12V 0,3A, +5VSB 3A, +3,3В 22A;
— standards: RoHS;
— support of graphics cards: Nvidia SLI and ATI CrossFire;
— voltage protection: OVP, SCP, UVP, OTP, AFC;
— failure-free operation: not less than 100 thousand hours.
Power sockets are represented by a couple of cables with two 4-contact peripheral power sockets (Molex), a single 4-contact power socket (Floppy), a couple of cables with three power sockets SATA, one stationary 20+ 4-contact motherboard power socket, one stationary 8-contact ATX12V/EPS12V socket, one 4-contact processor socket, and a couple of 8-contact PCI-E sockets.
It should be noted that PSU Chieftec A80 650W proved to demonstrate stability in the entire loading span. Optimal testing results, although, are achieved on high or maximal loading of key power channels. Testing in static loading mode with manual adjustment proves the claimed by the manufacturer showings: minimal deviation (1%-2%) from the nominal voltage index on maximal loading conditions. Moreover, the final diagram on dependence of efficiency from the loading level totally complies with the 80Plus Bronze certificate standards.
